What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a program (a family of XML file formats) that allows you to collect the latest information that you're interested in from various websites and view them in one place. It saves you the trouble of browsing your favorite sites hoping to find updated content.

How does RSS work?

RSS scans other websites that are also configured with RSS. It looks for the key words or subjects, and then downloads the content so you don't have to spend so much time web browsing.

It's a system whereby "dynamic" web sites that carry frequently updated information generate a separate "feed" comprising just the headlines and important stories.

How can you use RSS?*

  1. You can bookmark an RSS feed by pressing [CTRL] + D on your keyboard.
  2. You start by getting a news reader or aggregator. This is basically a one-stop shop for the latest updates from your favorite websites, blogs, or news outlets.

There are two primary sources of news readers: web-based and downloadable desktop applications.

These desktop applications require a small purchase price, but you get more features.

  3. Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is select the RSS feeds of the sites that you're interested in. Available RSS feeds are usually indicated by a small orange box with the letters RSS ADBI RSS Feeds or XML XML. You can subscribe to the feed by

    • clicking on the button
    • dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader
    • cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.
